Surf Coast Century 100

September 9, 2016

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, last weekend saw the 4th annual Surf Coast Century, a 100km Trail Ultramarathon held on Victoria’s surf coast.  Organised by Rapid Ascent, this is one of the most popular ultras in the country and the (relatively) flat, and very accessible, course is well suited to newbies and speedsters alike.  Once again hosting the AURA Australian Long Course Trail Running Championships, there was more than just a large stein and a trip to New Caledonia up for grabs at the pointy end.

As always, Rapid Ascent put on a great event the local trailrunning groups turned the positive vibe up to 11!  Surf Coast Trail Runners, Dandenongs Trail Runners, Peninsula Trail Runners and in particular the Lysterfield Trail Runners (LTR) all turned up in force to support their members and every other runner out there.  There was plenty of VFuel out on course and we were chuffed to hear how everyone went!

Specifically formulated to maximise digestibility, people are starting to discover that VFuel is go-to fuel for people that suffer gastric upset with traditional gels and drinks.  Nige S. of LTR said that he used “Vfuel drink mix all the way and 1 x Vfuel gel. No gut issues whatsoever.” Anita N., also of LTR, said “Pleased to say that I had no nutritional issues for the whole 100 and Vfuel was my fuel of choice. So good for people with digestive issues”.

VFuel Elite, Kellie Emmerson, showed up primed and ready to defend her title for the third consecutive year. Having set course records in 2014 and 2015, the punters had their money down on Kellie to make it three years running and even to go sub-9hrs.  While the unusually soft sand around Urquharts dashed her hopes of sub9hrs by a mere 3.5 minutes, she dominated the women’s race and established a Course Record of 9:03, likely to go unbeaten for some time.  Congratulations for taking out the not only the race, but also the Australian Long Course Trail Running Championships for a #3peat Kellie!  Kellie will now shift her training focus to the IAU World Trail Running Championships, being run as part of the Trans Peneda Geres event in Portugal late October 2016.
